Updated: Mar 9, 2023
iMovie trailer application that is featured on the iPad that enhances creativity but also engages students in a fun way by using the tools present on the application. iMovie trailer application is a short video trailer that could be used for students to present their work. It is also an application that can be applied into both primary and secondary levels however would be strong in subject areas such as History, English and Drama. Because iMovie trailer is tailored towards telling a story than an instructional video as trailers are meant to introduce stories to the audience in a short time frame.

This video was made in class and is an example of how engaging and fun it is to explore iMovie trailer, however it can be a distracting tool and without an sufficient amount of time on the application can be poorly used.
In enhancing a student’s creativity, the iMovie trailer application is versatile in the multimedia domain. Meaning iMovie can be embedded with videos, text, photos and students will have access to other presentation tools such as transitions and audio (Norman 2022). Therefore, with a wide range of tools accessible towards students they are given the freedom to explore and create trailers. Henriksen, Creely, Henderson and Mishra (2021) make note that when students are given a plethora of tools to create it will enhance their capacity to be creative.

When using iMovie trailer it gives teachers the option assign students to work collaboratively enhancing creativity (Loveless, Burton & Turvey 2006). Furthermore, students would be placed in situations to share their creativity with other students, hone in on their cognitive and social skills (Mouza & Lavigne, 2013). Thereby students can share ideas and have positive experiences towards collaboration (Loveless et al., 2005).
iMovie trailer does come with its limitations, as with any other emerging technology. The biggest issue that iMovie trailer comes with is limited stock multimedia therefore students will have to search online or create their own resources. Loveless, Burton and Turvey (2006) make note that groups can experience “range of emotions” that being avoiding mistakes and having feelings of anxiety working with other students who they did not get along with or match their level of enthusiasm (p.8). Another limitation would be that due to the short nature of iMovie trailer it wouldn’t be suited towards applying it for an weighted assessment task, rather an weekly assignment for students either to collaborate or individual create videos to introduce topics and themselves (Goudsouzian, 2018).

Great suggestion of technology to be used for creativity in education! I never thought making a trailer could be such an exciting activity for students. I believe trailers can be used in place of PowerPoint presentations to give students more exciting ways of showcasing their knowledge. When making trailers, students have to display their insights in a captivating way rather than merely introducing what they have learned, as with presentations, so I think having trailer making tasks replacing presentations may be really helpful for student meaning-making. The more meaning students can get out of learning, the more they understand the learning and the more they can use their learning to make something new. This is brilliant!
Your analyses are spot-on…
It is very interesting Shah, I like that you recognize the usability of the app but also specify the limitations that the use of this tool could have. I think that using one of these apps is very good for nurturing the creativity while learning who to edit videos for begginners in editing videos such as primary students. I dont think that an app like these will be usable for a secondary students due to the limits that you metion on video effects and stock.
Video editing is an exciting activity and there are lots of programs to use for it, with different levels of complexity and therefore of freedom in using them. In my shcool we used to use…
